IN D U ST RY N EW S BAD WEATHER CAUSES CONTAINERS TO FALL OVERBOARD IN NORTH SEA One of the largest container ships in the world, MSC Zo, lost 291 containers after they were thrown overboard in the North Sea above the Dutch Wadden Islands overnight between 1 and 2 January. Much of the content affected on the MSC Zo which is almost 400m long is thought to be car parts, toys and furniture. So far, a lot of this, and a number of containers, have Damaged containers aboard the MSC Zo Photo issued by the Dutch Coastguard washed up on the Frisian Wadden Islands and on the Wadden coast in Frysln and Groningen. Meanwhile, 238 containers have been located and seven have been recovered. The incident is thought to have been caused by stormy weather. Salvage of the sea containers started on 10 January in the North Sea. In addition, two large salvage vessels were commissioned by the MSC shipping company, and ships with sonar installations from Rijkswaterstaat, the Coast Guard and Defence were tasked with searching for containers that are still missing. How quickly the disposal of all containers can be completed depends on the weather, the shipping intensity, visibility under water, the tide and the location of the containers among other things. As FIDI Focus was going to press, the Coast Guard was continuing to search from the air for floating material. According to the Frysln safety regions website, Veiligheidsregio Frysln, these efforts will continue until all non-localised containers have been found. Anyone wanting more information is asked to look out for reports by Rijkswaterstaat, which is part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and responsible for the design, construction, management and maintenance of the main infrastructure facilities in The Netherlands.
