F E AT U RE Ice hockey is part of Canadian culture perspective compared with many other locations, is globally orientated and inhabited by law-abiding, socially conscious, literate, welcoming, hard-working people. Rob Stone, Vice Presient, client relations, at the MIGroup, agrees. Access to a highly diverse and educated workforce, a high standard of living, excellent educational system, close proximity to key US markets, and a rich multi-cultural environment have contributed to Toronto becoming a prime location for corporations and immigrants for several years. ARTHUR DREWRY, INTERNATIONAL RELOCATIONS MANAGER, TAYLOR INTERNATIONAL A DIVERSE PLACE TO DO BUSINESS Derek Duffy, President and co-owner of established FIDIAffiliate Armstrong International Movers Ltd, liststhecitys diversity, multilingual population, proximityto the USA and educated workforce as factors that make Toronto a good location for international moving companies. Brytor International Moving Incs Chief Operations Officer in Toronto, Jay Ryan, also rates the city which has a population of around six million as being wellconnected. Toronto international airport serves 40 million passengers a year and is a leading cargo hub. Rail and truck routes from the busy port of Montreal are wellestablished and there are rail services east to Halifax and west to Vancouver, with Toronto located centrally between Canadas coasts, explains Ryan. There is easy access to the USA/Canadian border, and well-established and developed communications, with inexpensive internet, cell and (landline) phone services. Taylor International has been established for almost 60 years and Manager Arthur Drewry considers the Toronto moving market to be mature. The 2011 census shows that one in five people living in Canada was born in a foreign country (20.6 per cent), he says. In the 2006 census, the figure was 19.8 per cent. It shows that people are moving to Canada. Many people come to Canada to work for a couple of years and then move on. The large immigrant population that continues to set up home in Canadas biggest metropolis offers many benefits, too. For example, Paramount Transportation Systems grew from a start-up company dealing mainly with the large migration of people from Hong Kong to Canada in the late 1980s to 1990s. HOCKEY NIGHT IN PUNJABI Armstrongs Derek Duffy tells a story that underlines how diverse Canada is. Ice hockey is part of our culture, he says. On a Saturday night, many Canadians huddle around the television with family and friends watching their favourite team play. ROB STONE, VICE PRESIDENT, CLIENT RELATIONS, THE MIGROUP Taylor International believes its FIDI FAIM certification has given it a competitive advantage in Canadas mature moving market 72 FF289FebMar19 pp70-79 City on the Move Toronto.indd 72 WWW.
