F E AT U RE HEARTBREAK THEN HELP When the deadliest fire in living memory broke out in Greece, Celebrity International Movers S.A. had to act. Chris Contorinis, IT Administrator, and Xenia Kostara, Sales & Agency Relations, explain JK Moving volunteers on the farm FIDI AFFILIATES PHILANTHROPY On 23 July 2018, a fire broke out in the western, mountainous region surrounding Athens in Greece. It would prove to be the deadliest fire in the history of the Hellenic nation, claiming 99 lives and injuring more than 160 people. More than 1,600 homes in the area were left uninhabitable. The location of the fire was unprecedented, with locals and holidaymakers taken by surprise, unable to comprehend how quickly it would spread or how dangerous it would be even on the surrounding beaches. A grieving nation watched on in helpless disbelief as the flames destroyed all in theirpath. At Celebrity, we have often visited these areas, for day trips to the beach or hikes in the mountains. Some of us even live there. When the dust settled and the fires were out, the aftermath was heartbreaking and haunting. We knew, without question or second thought, that we would do what we could to help. Together with the Cultural Center of Nea Makri, we gathered funds to send support to the victims of the fires. Thanks to a social media campaign and generous donations from our colleagues and employees, we also gathered clothing, food and tools at our warehouse. We then transported these items to the centre, to distribute as needed. In addition, we have helped with a toys-for-tots campaign, collecting donations for Christmas for the children affected by the fires. We invite anyone who would like to make a contribution to contact us at contact@celebrity.gr At a time when instability seems to be a global phenomenon even in the most developed nations Carina Bailey learns of the heartwarming efforts of three FIDI Affiliates, whose contributions to their communities are helping to make the world a better place T he environment is important to JK Moving Services and this ethos comes from the top.
