Jeremy Feldman David Keen o, 2020 was a year widely written off as a disaster for many. The collapse of Flybe, followed by the dreadful global pandemic that ensued, meant that no-one employed in aviation was left unaffected. There are, however, reasons to be optimistic. The UK is leading thus far in the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, and the preliminary data seems to suggest that this is having a marked effect in reducing the transmission of the disease. Whether that will be reflected in the demand for air travel for summer 2021 still remains to be seen. Youre on mute. How many times have we heard that uttered? It seemed like it was destined to become the phrase of 2020 but, alas, it might also take over 2021 as well. Sideways look takes us through a very entertaining and informative journey on how some of the phrases and words we commonly use have changed since the start of the pandemic. This issue, we also travel back in time to the glorious good old days, with a very informative piece on the genesis of air traffic control and the history of the distress call. If youre reading this, youre doing so digitally. It was with great regret that we had to make the decision to stop printing hard copies of The Log this year because of financial restrictions. Hopefully, this will only be temporary while we wait out the after-effects of COVID-19. In the meantime, going digital-only means we can focus on delivering a better user experience overall. This is a new era for The Log but, rest assured, your Log Board members will continue to work hard to produce content with the same level of dedication, professionalism and enthusiasm weve always had.
