Editorial - TS Today

Central to change

From the editor-in-chief 2017 the trials and tribulations go on Chris Fay Editor-in-chief chrisf@tsi.org.uk A belated happy new year and a hearty welcome to this, the first TS Today of 2017. After a year that saw some seismic political changes, in this edition we look at some of the issues that could be heading our way in 2017. Not that the major issues of 2016 have been put to bed, and any hopes that VW and Whirlpool were in for the new year, new me treatment have already been dashed. As 2016 came to a close, Which? announced it was starting a process that could result in judicial review of Peterborough Trading Standards handling of the Whirlpool tumble dryer safety issue. Meanwhile, the VW emissions scandal shows no sign of abating, with bosses at the troubled car manufacturer reported to be avoiding the US for fear of arrest. Back in the UK, thousands of motorists have joined a lawsuit against VW, which could cost it billions of pounds. As many of us enjoy some respite from the Christmas libations and possibly even a Dry January we look at how Carmarthenshire Trading Standards made sure revellers got what they paid for in the run-up to Christmas. They carried out an investigation that targeted about 40 bars and pubs, looking at counterfeit and mislabelled wine and spirits. Finally, Id like to remind you that our Leadership Conference takes place on 27 January, at the Barbican, in London. For those who havent yet registered for a place, this event is an opportunity for decision-makers and budget holders to network and share best practice. We look forward to seeing you there. Thanks for reading, Chris
