From the editor-in-chief That lovin feeling Love is in the air... Valentines Day, the most romantic day of the year, is almost upon us. However, I consider myself the most pragmatic and least romantic person in the universe. My priority is to ensure romance scammers dont stand a chance. According to Norfolk Trading Standards, last year an estimated 200,000 people reported falling victim to a romance scam in the UK. Please look out for our own twist on The Proclaimers Im gonna be (500 miles) song, which will be published in the run up to Valentines Day. Meanwhile last month, after two years of consultations, evidence-gathering sessions and, sadly, numerous tragic events, the government finally responded to the Lynn Faulds Wood report, Safety of Electrical Products in the UK. Now the government has created the new Office for Product Safety and Standards, which will give local authority trading standards services support and technical expertise to tackle product safety and market surveillance. It matches CTSIs key policies on product safety closely, and were pleased that the government has taken positive steps towards a more effective system. Product safety continues to dominate the news and for good reason. CTSI recently published its latest Business Companion video guide, offering businesses a brief overview of CE marking a manufacturers guarantee that goods made and sold within the EU conform to required safety standards. From toys to electrical products, a CE mark offers a vital additional layer of security against dangerous goods. The UK European Consumer Centre celebrated its 10th anniversary in December. The centre has taken us through some of its more bizarre cases by considering what the future might hold for UK consumer disputes post-Brexit. Id like to thank the UK ECC on behalf of all here at CTSI for its years of consumer advice. Are you passionate about your area of expertise? Do you drive and lead others to promote the latest developments in their field? If so, CTSI is calling for new lead officers to step forward. Our lead officers are dedicated to their chosen field, and work closely with the institute to respond to government consultations and attend events on our behalf. Before I sign off, Id like to congratulate trading standards officer and CTSI member Carol Garrett on being named in the Queens New Years Honours list for her services to border control, trading standards and business. Well done! Finally, as part of our continuing effort to improve communications with our members, we will be implementing some changes to our publications in the coming months. Keep an eye out for our chief executive Leon Livermores February update for further detail. Thanks for reading.
