From the Editor Welcome Welcome to our autumn issue of Assets, which centres on digital transformation and data, and how this is transforming the asset management landscape within assetowning organisations. In our lead feature, Ben Meek, Executive Vice-President, Data and Innovation at Utilligent, discusses why this area is so often misunderstood and not always given the attention it deserves in our sector compared with other industries. He delves into a number of practical examples of where new data foundations have been put in place and brought benefits. In his call to action, he reiterates the words of the IAMs late founding President, Norman Eason, to start managing data as an asset. In our profile interview, Julian Schwarzenbach, Data and Asset Management Consultant, says data needs to revolve around people. He highlights the ways that data quality issues can be addressed through a shared understanding of how it is used further down the line, often beyond each individuals area of responsibility. He also talks about his diverse background, which has led him to where he is now. Ursula Bryan hands over her regular column to Guy Parker, AMCLs Director of Digital and Asset Information, who discusses how far he feels the industry still has to go to keep pace with data and technology and bring asset management practices fully into this arena. He calls for greater guidance for organisations and invites you to join the conversation on the IAM Discussion Forum. Arcadis Netherlands Rudolph Jauregui, Hanno Spoelstra and Ilona Kemeling share their experience of creating a digital twin to improve the efficiency and safety of a 1970s lift bridge, which was suffering from reliability issues and facing the prospect of higher projected usage in the future. They present some of the wideranging benefits and there is a nifty link that takes you directly onto the bridge deck itself. So be sure to give that a try! PA Consultings Tom Crofts, Allan Boardman and Jennifer de Vries examine the concept of asset-intensive ecosystems and the challenges this brings, where complex structures often divide up asset ownership, operator and delivery roles among organisations. They demonstrate the critical need for alignment to a common vision and set of shared outcomes, and go on to set out a five-step approach. In our 60 seconds interview, we speak to Nikki Walsh, Chair of IAM Patrons Group and member of the Digital Group, about her journey into asset management, her exciting role in the working group, and what she sees as the most important issues facing the industry as well as what she gets up to outside of work. Meanwhile, Joe Inniss and Chris Charlwood venture into the future to look at how digital disruption is going to change the traditional asset management practices to which weve become accustomed. They go on to discuss the art of the possible, and the world of smart technology enabling automated asset data collection and decision-making. The IAMs Jodie Williamson details our Transform22 initiative, which has now been given the green light. She explains how greater autonomy will be given to the Chapters, along with a shift in the way volunteer committees and boards will be run. It will also give greater focus to knowledge development and enable the IAM Centre to set a common global framework. Narayanan Venkatesan, Asset Management Master Data Lead for a primary metal manufacturing company, discusses the common pitfalls and challenges around data migration, and offers some simple and practical steps to achieving effective asset data migration.
