This has increased from 77% in 2019. PENSIONS AUTO-ENROLMENT By the end of December 2021, there were 22.6m members in qualifying schemes, with 10.6m of these being automatically 10 enrolled. In 2021, there were 3.9 million pension policies sold. (*Includes personal and workbased individual pension as well as trust based pensions, master trusts and investment only pension.) RETIREMENT INCOME An estimated 67bn was withdrawn from pension pots through both drawdown payments and cash withdrawals in the period April 2020-April 2021. INCOME DRAWDOWN In 2021, 7.8bn was invested in income drawdown products, with 93,400 new contracts an average of almost 83,500 invested. This compares with 7.3bn and 94,300 contracts sold in 2020. ANNUITIES In 2020, there were 5.8m pension annuities, with 10.9bn in payments being made. In 2021, there were just under 54,000 annuity sales, increasing from 49,000 in 2020 The total value of annuity sales increased to 3.8bn. 43% of annuities were bought from the existing provider. INVESTMENT AND SAVINGS 54m Policies were in force at the end of 2021. On average, 308m was paid each day. 2021 saw 31,000 new savings and investment policies sold. There were 411,000 new ISA policies in 2021. PROTECTION There were 20.4m individual term, whole of life, income protection and critical illness insurance policies in force in 2020. Around 3.1m new individual and group protection products were taken out in 2021. 6.8 billion was paid to 296,000 customers or families as a result of claims on protection insurance policies in 2021, an average of 18.6m each day. There were 10.4m members of group life cover, group income protection and group critical illness schemes, of which 7.4m were life cover. 98% of protection claims were paid out, including 97% of term life insurance claims and 92.5% of critical illness claims.
