Editor’s welcome

Step into Christmas cautiously Frances Darling is head of business and consumer protection, Homes & Communities, Place Directorate, with Shropshire Council, and its representative on the CEnTSA management board Welcome to the Winter 2021 edition of TSBN. I want to start this edition on a positive, albeit cautionary, note. Despite the risks associated with COVID-19 remaining, we have avoided returning to further restrictions and this is having a positive impact on the countrys economic recovery. The rollout of the vaccination programme has clearly had a significant impact on facilitating this recovery, with businesses continuing to implement covid-secure measures and individuals doing their bit to ensure high levels of vaccination uptake, and continuing with good hygiene practices. As we head into the winter months, however, we cannot ignore concerns about the potential impact of seasonal flu and the challenges for businesses as we see more examples of the impact of the UKs EU exit. Despite the risks with COVID-19 remaining, we have avoided returning to further restrictions and this is having a positive impact on the countrys economic recovery With the UN Climate Conference (COP26) having taken place in Glasgow in November, plans to make the UK carbon neutral by 2050 are also to the fore. In this edition of TSBN, we look at the importance of sustainability for small businesses and some of the simple steps you can take to help the country move towards net zero while benefiting your bottom line. We also highlight resources and advice around economic recovery, including signposting to commercial opportunities, and guidance on the positive impact that entering business awards can bring. There are also timely reminders about buying from reputable suppliers, preventing cyber attacks, and the work being done to protect legitimate businesses from the impact of counterfeit and illicit tobacco. On the subject of product safety, this edition covers construction products, changes in the law relating to Botox and cosmetic fillers, fire safety and CE marking, as well as an update on the implementation of changes to food-allergen labelling under Natashas Law. We highlight action to be taken by poultry farmers and bird keepers to reduce the risk of avian flu this winter, look at the implications of Brexit for feed businesses and animal health, and give a few pointers on compliance with labelling and claims for manufacturers and suppliers of pet and horse feed. Please read on for the detail, and feel free to circulate this and future editions of TSBN to other organisations and your colleagues.
