Editorial - TS Today

From the editor-in-chief Trick or treat? Eleni Chalkidou Editor-in-chief elenic@tsi.org.uk Now the clocks have moved back and the nights are drawing in, it can mean only one thing: Halloween and Bonfire Night! While children are out trick-or-treating dressed as ghouls, enjoying the fireworks with roasted chestnuts and eating toffee apples, lets spare a thought for the enormous pressure our trading standards officers are facing at this time of the year. Especially as all the other TS work is ongoing simultaneously. Now if that isnt a trick, I dont know what is! The past few weeks have been occupied with firework-storage inspections and underage sales tests, as well as safety inspections of childrens clothing to ensure they meet flammability requirements. Recently, the national press reported Poundworlds recall of childrens Halloween disguises over safety fears, which calls into focus the need for a national product-safety system that is fit for the 21st century an issue that our legal article highlights in this edition of TS Today. Lets be clear, without this vital prevention and safety work, these magical nights would be a much more frightening affair. National Consumer Week draws ever closer, with the start date now revealed as 27 November. CTSI is producing two animations on subscriptions, along with the usual social media packs, to help promote the campaign. Please look out for tagline Not what you signed up for? and the hashtag #WarningSign. Of course, our work at CTSI is not limited to one week of the year, and our car-clocking campaign was set in motion at the recent Conservative Party Conference in Manchester. As our chief executive, Leon Livermore, put it, the unfettered ability to reduce mileages places significant resource and evidential burdens on trading standards officers, who have to investigate and take action. This odometer fraud practice must stop. Our thanks go again to all who attended the first CTSI Brexit Think Tank meeting in London. It was a lively and informative day and an excellent starting position for our work. As ever, watch out for the latest update on our discussions in the next edition of TS Review, due out in January. For now, watch Patricia Gibson, MP for North Ayrshire and Arran during a recent debate at Westminster Hall passionately ask for a cast-iron guarantee that consumer rights and protections will not be watered down postBrexit. Last but not least, a little shout out for our very own VP Baroness Wilcox who says Brexit needs to include the consumer at every step of the way on her appointment as the National Consumer Federations President. Very much deserved! Thanks for reading.
