Obituary Robert Charles Gye 1945 2017 Born on 19 September 1945, Bob a larger than life character, who will be sadly missed died in his hometown of Neath, Swansea, on 16 February, after a long battle with cancer. After leaving school, Bob joined Neath Council as a trainee, moving after qualifying to the London Borough of Kingston, and later to the London Borough of Croydon. He returned to south Wales for a time before moving back to the London Borough of Bexley, then Aberystwyth, followed by a return to the South East with Kent County Council at Folkestone. His next employment was at Newport, with a final move to Ceredigion Council in mid-Wales, where he was head of service. After retirement, Bob continued to live in the county of Dyfed, firstly at Ciliau Aeron, near Lampeter, followed by Llangrannog and, finally, Neath. In his younger days, Bob played rugby for London Welsh; as a schoolboy he was Welsh Junior Weightlifting Champion, also representing Wales in the Junior Commonwealth Games at the shot putt. He had many interests later in life: singing with Bryncoch Male Voice Choir; as a season ticket holder with Swansea Football Club; and, most of all, his family. In retirement, he studied history and French and gained a degree from the Open University. Bobs funeral, preceded by a short service at his home, was held at Margam Crematorium, Port Talbot, on 6 March, attended by a large number of relatives, friends and colleagues. Refreshments were provided afterwards at the Liberty Stadium, Swansea, where a Swansea team shirt was draped over Bobs seat. He made many friends throughout his service, including colleagues in Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Our condolences go to his wife Sandra, son Rohan, daughter Clare and their families. Contributed by Chris Withers, retired trading standards manager, London Borough of Bexley. To share this page, in the toolbar click on
