Obituaries Alex Gordon An Righ Ceann An Iar* 19642016 Trading standards officer (TSO) Alex Gordondied on 28 January aged 51. Its probably fair to say that Alexs loves in life were (in no particular order): his friends and family, Frstenberg beer, the West End of Glasgow, brightly coloured clothes, mad Christmas jumpers, cooking, history, poetry, rugby, sports in general and all things Dutch. Alex worked in the Strathclyde region and then at Glasgow Trading Standards for 29 years. After studying for the Diploma in Trading Standards at Manchester Metropolitan University where he learned to love the City team and qualifying as a TSO, Alex went on to work in a number of regional offices, as well as being part of a specialist team investigating coal deliveries to local authority establishments. Alex spent a great deal of his own personal time assisting trainees to gain their professional qualification by setting up practical workshops to test metrological equipment. What else were Saturday mornings for anyway? hed say. I know there will be quite a few TSOs grateful for the time and effort he put into helping them. I think this may be one of the many reasons that Alex was so well known by people far and wide in the trading standards community not to mention the lively debates he would have with anyone on any subject! Alex had a love of all sport and used to wax lyrical about it, especially the aforementioned Manchester City, which he supported when he was studying there and before they were successful. His greatest love, though, was rugby union and no team more so than Glasgow Hawks. He wrote freelance match reports for various newspapers over the years he was particularly proud when some of his early match reports were printed in the Sunday Herald and had travelled with the first XV to away games since 1997. He later went on to become the clubs press officer. Alex was also a committed trade unionist, and the deputy service conditions officer for the Glasgow Branch of Unison. He often spoke about his parents and his socialist upbringing in Glasgow. In recent years he fought many health battles and lost his final one with huge dignity and courage, not to mention that dry wit that we all knew so well. Characteristically, Alexs last entrance to Dalnottar Crematorium was to Rip it Up by Orange Juice and he left us pondering on Jump Around by House of Pain. We, friends and family, smiled at the memories. A tribute to Alex was published on the Glasgow Hawks website. *King of the West End Contributed by Peter Fergie, with special thanks to Linda Gray and colleagues at Glasgow Trading Standards Peter Edwin Campbell 19302016 Peter Campbell, a retired CTSI member, died in Honiton, Devon, aged 85, on 28 January. Peters early career was spent as a weights and measures inspector in East Africa to prove it he could swear in Swahili before he returned to the UK to take up an appointment in London. He moved to Devon in the mid-1960s, where he took up a post in one of its Exeter divisions, staying with Devon until his retirement in 1991. Former colleague Syd Cherrill recalls: My most vivid memory is being with Peter in his Austin Cambridge (I think) chasing a coalman around the streets of Teignmouth and Dawlish. The driver used every bump and swerve to try to tip over the bags on his lorry but Peter stuck with him back to his yard where the full bags were weighed and found to be short weight for which he received a written caution and had a very close eye kept on him. On another occasion, a coalman refused Peters request to place bags of coal on the scales Peters reaction was to walk around to the cab, remove the keys from the ignition and tell the errant gentleman he was in for a long wait! Needless to say it did not take long for him to realise he had been outmanoeuvred and had to comply with Peters request. Another former colleague, Peter Greene, remembers him as a mentor: He was principal officer (safety) in Devon and was always generous in giving his time and offering advice to new officers like me. In fact, so free was he with his time on the phone advising other officers that, on his retirement, his office phone was presented to him as a parting gift. Following his retirement in 1991, Peter continued with much voluntary work in the Honiton area. After his wife Betty died from cancer in 1997, he worked tirelessly for the Honiton branch of Hospiscare and helped raise thousands of pounds for the charity he held so dear. Peter was a life-long member and past chairman of the South Western Branch of CTSI, which, along with all his former colleagues and friends, offers its sincere condolences to his children Stan, Lynn, Jayne, Tracey and Ross, and his nine grandchildren. FOREVER IN THEIR HEARTS COLLEAGUES REMEMBER PETER CAMPBELL He had a heart attack and the doctor told him a contributory factor was the cheese sandwiches he had for lunch during his entire career! He was a lovely man who had a great sense of humour and always kept things in their proper perspective He was dedicated to his work, where he exercised close attention to detail, which avoided many pitfalls. His concern for me, as a fledgling officer, was greatly appreciated He was a lovely man a mine of useful information He will be sadly missed by all those who knew Contributed by many members and compiled by Ian Warwick, South West Branch secretary To share this page, in the toolbar click on and worked with him " , "30":"Business classifieds Advertise now: 01268 582221 advertising@tsi.org.uk Looking for staff?
