From the CEO – People power

From the CEO People power Peoples skills and capabilities are an essential part of the supply chain and, here, CEO Ursula Bryan reflects on what this means for our wider asset management community A There is much more we need to do, in particular with communicating with wider society about how asset management benefits peoples lives, to attract more people into our profession I am always keen to hear from members and our wider asset management community, so please email me if you would like to discuss this article or if there is anything you would like to discuss. sset management skills and capabilities are a vital consideration for all the people and organisations with which I have the privilege to interact across the world, whether it is individuals advancing their own knowledge and skills or organisations looking to enhance their collective capabilities. Over the years, the institute has developed many resources and services to support individuals and organisations along their asset management journey, such as exams, the process to become an asset management professional, and our body of knowledge. We are still developing these today, and later in the magazine you will see the work we are starting to do to review and revise the IAM Competences Framework. Our asset management community has posted several topics on the IAM Discussion Forum associated with asset management skills and capabilities. For example, Amy Lindblom raised the question, are we doing enough to prepare future asset managers? Reviewing the responses indicates there is much more we need to do, in particular with communicating with wider society about how asset management benefits peoples lives, to attract more people into our profession. Our President, Christian Roberts, recently posted his thoughts on LinkedIn, asking the question, how do we make infrastructure careers attractive? where he identifies that if the infrastructure funding is going to deliver the intended impact, we need to attract the workforce for the infrastructure business of tomorrow. He says: Now is the time to recognise these workers monumental impact on society. This year, our global conferences theme is why outcomes matter. This conference is building on the IAM ITN-partnered digital news-style programme Why outcomes matter highlighting the importance of starting with the end in mind when it comes to building infrastructure. At the conference, we will explore the importance of outcomes to society, and there will be case studies and examples of how infrastructure benefits society. The conference is taking place virtually from 14-15 June 2023 and is free to all individual members of the institute. It has been scheduled to cover as many time zones as possible to support attendance from across the world. If you are not an individual IAM member and would like to attend the conference, join the institute and enjoy the conference and all the other benefits of being a member. While the Why outcomes matter programme and the IAM global conference 2023 will help with understanding the importance of outcomes, what more do we need to do to communicate with wider society on how the asset management profession and infrastructure careers benefit society? I would be interested to hear your thoughts and views, so I have posted the question on the IAM Discussion Forum. Please participate in the discussion. I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas and how the discussion develops, with contributors building on, and questioning, others contributions. Finally, I want to say a massive thank you to all our volunteers. We have had a fantastic response to the recent calls for volunteers to participate in our activities. I really appreciate everything you do you are the lifeblood of the IAM.
