IAM news Latest stories from and about the Institute Remembering Suzane Greeman The IAM community was sad to hear about the death of one of our strongest and most energetic voices: Suzane Greeman, who epitomised the volunteer spirit that makes the IAM strong. Suzane was the Founder and CEO of Greeman Asset Management Solutions, Inc and Greeman Asset Management Academy, as well as the Branch Lead for the IAM Manitoba Branch. She was a regular voice on numerous IAM webinars, always willing to share her experiences, her insights, and her knowledge. Suzane graduated from the University of Technology, Kingston, Jamaica, as an electrical engineer. Her first employment was with the Caribbean Cement Company in Jamaica where, over the course of eight years, she worked her way up to Senior Engineer. Suzane credited this organisation for her solid footing and direction in life. Suzane then moved into a management role with an organisation in Puerto Rico, where her fluency in Spanish was an asset. Afterwards, she joined FL Schmidt in Pennsylvania, where she led numerous projects around the world, including in India and Dubai. At this career juncture, she considered herself a global citizen. Suzane moved back to the Caribbean where she spent around four years at Trinidad Cement Company in human resources. This experience gave her valuable insights into the importance of team building, employee engagement and leadership skills. She spent three incredible years in Bermuda at BELCO. Suzane then moved to Canada and joined Veolia in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she spent three years as Above-Ground Asset Manager. Aspiring to follow her dream of starting her own company, in 2019 she launched Greeman Asset Management Solutions and Greeman Academy. She rose to the forefront of asset management, providing expertise to clients with assets of more than $75bn. In 2020, she was recognised as one of the top 20 industry and media influencers. Suzanes extensive experience spanned more than 25 years implementing asset management strategies for transportation, cement manufacturing, power generation, and wastewater treatment. Through the Greeman Academy, she made her asset management courses available online for wide-reaching and convenient access. Suzane held a Bachelor of Engineering degree and an MBA. She also had the following certifications: Asset Management Diploma (IAM), Certified Manager of Quality and Organisational Excellence (ASQ CMQ/OE), Certified Asset Management Assessor (CAMA), Certified Asset Management Professional (CAMP), and Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP). She was the founding President of the PEMAC Winnipeg Chapter, and a member of the ISO/TC 251 Committee for Asset Management and Branch Leader for the IAM Manitoba Branch. In addition, she took enormous pride in volunteering as a professional mentor to young professionals and university students. The IAM paid tribute, saying: Suzane was always lively and engaged, a consummate professional who enjoyed her work and the people she worked with. We have been honoured to know and work with Suzane. While we have lost a dear friend and co-worker, her voice will always be with us. On behalf of the IAM community, we wish to send our deepest sympathies to her family, including her husband, Antonio, and children, Ashanti and Anna. IAM South West branch change of chair After nearly three years since its formation, the chair of the IAM SW Branch is changing chair with Andrew McArthur stepping up to replace Ray Galeozzie. Galeozzie said: In what has been a challenging time for all branches in the past couple of years, I am proud to have represented the IAM SW Branch and form a strong committee that is committed to supporting the local membership. We have managed to run a number of events both in person and online, including a jointly managed event with the Institute of Water and PipeIine Industries Guild, an event that was well attended and with a strong line up of asset management-themed presentations. Additionally, we manage to put a newsletter out to our community on an almost quarterly basis and have established a strong relationship with the defence community that has seen the formation of the Defence Asset Management Community of Practice. Finally, I wish Andrew the best of luck in taking on the role and know he will take the branch on to the next level supported by a good and knowledgeable committee. McArthur said: I am excited to be taking on this role and to build on the excellent work of the committee under Rays leadership during the past three years. If our last in-person event at the University of Bath is anything to go by free from the shackles of COVID restrictions and with a burgeoning interest and need for good asset management across sectors I have no doubt that the next few years will be full of opportunities for information and knowledge sharing in the South West. A huge thank you to Ray for his leadership, determination and commitment to standing up the committee and growing it through a time of unprecedented restrictions. Well done and thank you! For those with an interest in asset management in the South West, please get in touch. We are always looking for your input and welcome ideas, case studies, speakers and support with events. We are also looking for an early career representative to join the committee, so if that is you then register your interest. The Pathway to Excellence The IAM is pleased to release its latest asset management publication Pathway to Excellence In Asset Management: IAM Maturity Scale and Guidance to further your knowledge of asset management excellence and maturity. The material in these publications is the cumulative product of several IAM studies on the subject during the past 15 years. It continues, of course, to be an evolving story. The subject of asset management and the characteristics of adequacy, good or best practice are continually changing through process innovations, new technology and learning. This new IAM publication provides guidance on asset management maturity and how it can be defined, scaled and recognised. It contains a maturity scale, For IAM events, see page 19. ranging from Innocence to Excellence, along with definitive attributes and provides insights for recognising what might be observed in organisations at different stages of their maturity journey. There are also widely different operational environments, constraints, cultures and opportunities in asset management, so what is recognised as competent or excellent needs to consider the context of the organisation and how this changes. Such context dependencies are discussed in this guide including refinements and additional considerations associated with the IAM conceptual model from 6 boxes to 10 boxes for higher levels of maturity.
