Health THE LOWDOWN ON SUPPLEMENTS Should you be taking vitamins and minerals? A healthy, balanced diet should provide all the nutrients you need for good health, but many people also take vitamins, minerals and other dietary supplements to ease arthritis symptoms. Which could you try and is there any evidence they work? Omega-3 fatty acids Probiotics Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) are natural anti-inflammatories, found in high levels in oily fish. Some research shows that taking omega-3 may ease tender joints, pain and early morning stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This may reduce inflammation and is good for bone health and the immune system. Low vitamin D levels have been linked to autoimmune diseases such as RA, and some research suggests low levels may increase the risk and progression of osteoarthritis (OA). The government recommends that adults take a daily 10g (400 IU) vitamin D supplement in autumn and winter. If you are at high risk of vitamin D deficiency (have dark skin or dont go outdoors very often), you should take the supplement all year round. Glucosamine sulphate and chondroitin sulphate Some research shows that taking glucosamine sulphate supplements, with or without chondroitin, may nourish damaged joint cartilage in people with OA. The recommended dose is 1,250-1,500mg per day; theres no recommended dose of chondroitin. Glucosamine may affect blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and interact with blood-thinning medicines, so talk to your GP before taking it if you have other medical conditions. Look for vegetarian alternatives if you have a shellfish allergy. WORDS: Victoria Goldman Vitamin D research in April 2022 found that turmeric supplements taken for at least 12 weeks may help pain, stiffness and mobility in knee OA. Taking omega-3 may ease tender joints, pain and early morning stiffness in RA Good bacteria that live in the gut (the gut microbiome) play an important role in the immune system. Its early days, but some research suggests taking probiotics may ease the symptoms of RA and other autoimmune diseases. Take care: You usually need to take a dietary supplement for three months or more to see if it works. Its important to discuss dietary supplements with your doctor or a pharmacist before taking them. Turmeric Turmeric contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties. French 9 Inspire Spring 23 pp09 Supplements.indd 9 15/02/2023 09:08
