Talking and sharing our problems really does help, as TV presenter Julian Worricker finds out

Arthritis diary Role models A story about a 30-yearold at the top of their game underlines the point that arthritis is not just aches and pains for older people Having a sporting role model speak out about arthritis would help the cause, says BBC presenter Julian Worricker I need your help. Im after ideas, suggestions, and names of people who might help raise the profile of Versus Arthritis in the sporting world. Let me explain why. First, it gets to the heart of what arthritis means to people who have it. The condition can compromise or, worse still, stop the physical activity weve previously enjoyed. You dont have to be a top-drawer sportsperson to feel deeply frustrated when an unforeseen barrier suddenly gets in the way of doing a bit of exercise. In my case, until better drugs came along, I could no longer grip a golf club. Many would say that was a blessing in disguise, but, for others, there has been a much bigger price to pay. Coupled with that is the undoubtedly valuable advice which can appear ironic that taking exercise is a good way to improve ones arthritis. Fine, we think, but its the arthritis that has made taking exercise more difficult. Square that circle if you can. Second, we tend to associate sport certainly top-level sport with younger people. So, when we read that a top sportsman or woman has been diagnosed with arthritis, we tend to be surprised. While I wouldnt wish the condition on anyone, theres no doubt that a story about a 30-year-old at the top of their game underlines the point that arthritis is not just aches and pains for older people. It raises the profile of the condition, makes people think a bit, and maybe has them questioning their previous assumptions. While none of us has a window into the locker room at, say, Wimbledon, I imagine there was a bit more discussion on the subject after former world No. 1 tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, spoke publicly about her arthritis a few years ago. Bridging the gap Third, its about role models. Ive been teaching journalism at two London universities lately, and if youre looking for high-profile individuals who might bridge the generational divide and unite young and old, you need look no further than the football field. Thats what my group of 18- and 19-year-old students told me. For example, in Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling, you have two young men who invite widespread interest and in the vast majority of cases widespread acclaim. It means, when they speak out, people listen. Imagine the difference it would make to Versus Arthritis if we could get a champion on board. Someone with a significant profile in the sport at which he or she excels, who also has an interest in, or even personal experience of, arthritis. I have some names Julian Worricker and ideas, but the list is by no means complete.
