Summer is here yes, really but it is hard to believe. While others set up for weddings, christenings and summer frolics, we see rosters that prevent us being normal folk. That is why being a member of BALPA is important to protect what we have, and improve the lifestyle of members across all employers. BALPA is a member of the ECA (European Cockpit Association) and also IFALPA (The International Federation of Air Line Pilots Associations), where we work with other member associations to represent pilots worldwide. The work undertaken by these is in line with what we do as a professional association and trade union. BALPA is one of the worlds biggest pilot associations, and our involvement internationally is respected and welcomed by our peers. I attended the ECA presidents meeting earlier this year, led a delegation to the IFALPA conference in Mexico and, in June, we will send a strong team to Brussels for the ECA conference. This work is vital to promote our profession worldwide, as well as influencing at the highest levels. Domestically, we continue to engage with employers, regulators and politicians. We have had coverage in the press with the BBC recently seeking a view from BALPA on a Newsnight piece where Amy Leversidge, our General Secretary, explained why pilots are crucial to the future of aviation. The pressure on our existence will continue to be a focus as artificial intelligence and technology will be presented to operators as a potential cost saving. We must be clear that any change must not deliver safety parity, but must improve aviation safety. We are in our annual election cycle for those who will represent you for the coming years, and while election fatigue will undoubtedly be problematic, it is important that you vote. Participation and engagement deliver a strong message to employers. BALPA is your collective voice, but you must use your individual voice to show strength and unity. We need BALPA to be outwardlooking, influential, and winning for pilots everywhere. BALPA is changing for the better. For us to win for pilots, we need to be a united team that works for all our members. Throughout this period, we have been pleased to witness great solidarity, both within companies and across the organisation. We thank you for the messages of support we have received for our striking members at Bristow. Weve also received an incredible message of support from attendees of the IFALPA conference, including BALPA Executive President Paul Copland and General Secretary Amy Leversidge. The message is clear: stay united, the pilots of the world support you. Stay up to date with BALPAs industrial news at portal.balpa.org/news Political influence In the run up to the general election, we met a number of influential MPs including Aviation Minister Anthony Browne MP, and Shadow Aviation Minister Mike Kane MP. Our contacts in Westminster have also helped us put pressure on specific employers. Support from Alistair Carmichael, the MP for Orkney and Shetland, resulted in the Bristow strikes being raised with Transport Ministers in the Commons, and an Early Day Motion being published in support of those dedicated helicopter pilots and technical crews. With the general election under way, our work has slightly shifted. BALPAs election manifesto, emailed out to all members, sets out the four priority areas and those policies we believe the next government should enact. It is a calling card for candidates, MPs and the future government to back the hard-working pilots who are at the forefront of the aviation industry. We now need our members to help amplify our asks of the next government. We urge all of our members to forward it to your local candidates and explain how these issues impact you. Together, lets make the next government one that works for pilots and supports us in our tireless campaigning for better terms, conditions and rights. BALPA elections The time has come once more for BALPA Company Council elections. At a local level, your priorities and campaigns are delivered by the Company Council representatives you elect. They lead the way through collective bargaining to improve the pay, terms and conditions for BALPA members. Being an elected representative means championing causes, attending formal meetings, and supporting individual pilots in need. It can be hard work at times, but is also incredibly rewarding. Training is provided, time off granted, and reps have access to the support, resources, and expertise of the team at BALPA HQ. As we move through the Company Council process, we want as many members as possible to participate, either by standing or voting. 7 THE LOG Sum 24 pp06-07 News.indd 7 13/06/2024 12:59
