A sizzling edition for the BBQ season! Frances Darling is head of business and consumer protection, Homes & Communities, Place Directorate, with Shropshire Council, and its representative on the CEnTSA management board Welcome to the Summer 2023 edition of TSBN, the second of four editions that we aim to bring to you by the end of this year. I hope the advice provided in this issue helps ease the regulatory compliance challenges that businesses face on a regular basis. If there are regulatory issues affecting you directly that you would like us to cover, please get in touch and let us know. We will do our very best to provide guidance that works for you. In this edition, we have the results of the Federation of Small Businesses Celebrating Small Business Awards UK final, held in Solihull last month. I was delighted to see success in the West Midlands, with EGO Technology winning the National Sustainability Award. It was Sprinkler Safety Week at the end of May, and we highlight how important sprinkler systems are at keeping people and buildings safe from fire. I was delighted to see success in the West Midlands, with EGO Technology winning the National Sustainability Award Following on from our article on recruitment and training in the Spring edition, we provide further guidance on getting staff training right to minimise business compliance risks and on dealing with temporary staff and casual labour for the holiday season. As we move into what will, hopefully, be warmer weather (although Im sure no-one wants the 40-degree heat we experienced last summer), theres a focus on safety at outdoor events, and on artificial tanning aids, such as sunbeds, tanning tubes and nasal tanning sprays. We offer top tips on business scams, which are ever evolving and require constant vigilance to minimise the risk of financial losses, and explain what to look for to identify potentially dodgy businesses that may pop up locally or online. We summarise the challenges faced by rural businesses and the impact of these, and look at the current position on international trade. Finally, there is advice on the legal responsibilities for businesses that operate as aggregators in the food industry but dont consider that they sell or supply food, as well as the latest position on avian flu for those in the poultry industry. I hope you will agree that the hardworking TSBN team has again brought together a broad range of useful articles, so please read on for the detail. Feel free to circulate this and future editions of TSBN to other organisations and your colleagues and do get in touch if there are topics you would like us to cover.
