Editors comment The s words Louise Parfitt on spinning plates, smart designs and sustainability How do you feel about active travel? Most of us would agree that the principles behind it are sound fewer vehicles clogging up busy routes means less pollution and congestion (and stress!), and better accessibility for people who need to drive into central areas, such as Blue Badge holders or those making deliveries. Then there are the benefits for individuals in increasing their physical activity, as well as the increased footfall for businesses that people pass on their way or use to get around. The government certainly seems to think that active travel can help save our planet, high street and health, having announced funding for it and appointed a commissioner to oversee it but, practically, will it work? The BPAs Park Active scheme was created to help local authority parking managers to adapt existing infrastructure and keep their many plates spinning including managing parking demand and capacity, air quality, traffic flow, and local economy support. On pages 14-16, Sarah Juggins hears from a council that has just gone live with its Park Active scheme, and hears why there is now an urgency to engage with sustainable travel plans and get involved. Sustainability is a buzzword we hear a lot. On pages 22-23, we hear how the cradle to grave carbon footprints of our car parks can be reduced through smart design and construction. Electric vehicles and their chargepoints another issue that often has the s word attached also play an important part, but they need to suit user needs, as features on pages 26 and 28 discuss. Meanwhile, the countdown to Parkex has begun. There is a lot of activity in BPA HQ to make this an absolute corker of a comeback see pages 18-20. Its also BPA election time. On pages 40-43 and 47-48, we examine the new BPA governance structure, the role of the BPA in making members voices heard in government, and how you can get involved . As always, if you have a story to share, please do get in touch.
