58 AM O PI N I O N Better together In her rst column, incoming FIDI President Laura Ganon discusses the rationale behind the new revision of the FAIM Standard and reects on FIDIs collaborative role in progress within the moving industry T ime ies. It feels like yesterday that I joined the FIDI Board and here I am after eight years, honoured by FIDI Afliates trust to take on the role as your President. Thank you. FIDI is built on solid ground, and year after year it helps our companies to evolve. Some people may view the FAIM Standard as purely assurance of a quality move this itself is already a great deal, but FAIM is much more than this. Its purpose is to help us, as FIDI Afliates, develop our companies, modernise our processes, keep up with the fast changes that we must face and adapt to, so our businesses can survive and be protable. It is human to want to stay within our comfort zone but we just cant afford to do so. While the world is changing and we dont always know how to keep up, FAIM comes in and shows us the best way. It pushes us to be better. FAIM 2022, the new version of FIDIs quality standard certainly does this. It brings four new important requirements: digitisation, cyber security, risk management, and sustainability. I believe the rst three elements are actually part of the fourth. How can you run a sustainable business without at least starting the journey of digitising your processes? And while doing this, you must be aware of the cyber risks and make sure you do what you must to prevent them which is part of risk management. All these factors are linked, and it is more important than ever that we pay attention to them. I am sure some of us may think lets just keep using paper and not worry about these risks. However, the world has changed, and technology plays a huge role in everything that we do. While this has brought new concerns and costs, it has also forced us to improve our processes and do a better job for our customers. If you look closely, too, it will help us save a great deal of money. W W W. F ID I. O R G FF306 June-August 22 pp04-05 Laura Column.indd 5 Innovation should be a part of our daily thinking and we should always strive to nd new, more effective processes to run our companies. We are incredibly lucky to be a part of FIDI and have access to a rich pool of ideas. If we collaborate well, the change will be a painless process. What a privilege to not have to nd all the answers on our own. Sustainability is much broader than offsetting our carbon footprint by paying a bill. We should all look more closely at what we can do to ensure we can comply with our customers increasing demands in this area. We certainly want to go beyond just keeping our businesses strong. Most of all, we want to leave a better world for our future generations. We care. We know we cant save the world in one go, but little by little, we can do so much better. And what better way to start this journey than coming together to discuss and brainstorm in person? The FIDI Conference in Cannes gave us the perfect opportunity to start important conversations on these topics and to join forces with the FIDI 39 Club, RMCs and other organisations to nd a road towards more widespread action on sustainability. It is a long road, but one we must start now. Finally, on a less formal note, what a great conference! Thank you to everyone who attended. For those who could not make it to Cannes, 2023 is around the corner and I really hope you will be able to join us. FIDI Cannes was a most deserved celebration. After three years, we could nally meet each other in person again and enjoy time together while doing business and learning. Most of all, we had the joy and relief of seeing that, in spite of the difculties of the pandemic years were still standing, yeah, yeah, yeah!
