IND U STRY N E W S Fire breaks out aboard Yantian Express Library picture of fire in containers Containers aboard the Yantian Express have been damaged after a fire broke out in one container on deck and spread to additional containers. The crew of eight officers and 15 seafarers were unharmed in the incident on 3 January. Efforts to extinguish the fire in the containers were launched immediately, but originally had to be suspended because of a significant deterioration in weather conditions. The 7,510 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) vessel, which is 320m long and sails under German flag in the East Coast Loop 5 (EC5) service, was built in 2002 and was on its way from Colombo to Halifax via the Suez Canal. At the time the incident was reported, the ship was approximately 650 nautical miles off the coast of Canada. As FIDI Focus went to press, the fire was still burning. Transportation company Hapag-Lloyd has been closely cooperating with all relevant authorities and, according to its latest update, has to assume that all cargo in bay 12 on deck and forward is directly affected by the fire also all cargo in Hold 1 (bays one to nine). Further, it is expected that all cargo in Hold 2 (bay 11 to 17) is affected by fire, smoke and/or damage caused by firefighting water. Damage caused by smoke, heat and/or firefighting water in adjacent areas is possible. It also expected that all reefers in bays one to 24 were without power and switched off. All other bays with reefers were continuously supplied with power and in operation. In a statement, the company said: As soon as the full extent of such damages can be accurately determined, we will promptly revert with further details. We fully understand that, even at this point, you would like to have further clarification on your shipment(s) onboard. Please appreciate that, at this moment, we are not in a position to provide any more specific information. Let us assure you that we are working hard on getting more detailed information on your cargo and will share this with you as soon as possible. We thank you for your trust in our company. ANOTHER AWARD FOR JKS KUHN In December, JK Moving Services CEO Chuck Kuhn was named as the Loudoun Times Mirrors Corporate Citizen of the Year 2018 as a result of his leadership. This is the latest in a string of awards Kuhn has received in recent months for his efforts to help JK Movings local community and environment. JK Moving began as a local company that has grown over the years, thanks to Kuhns leadership. Of his philosophy, WW W. F I D I. O R G FF289FebMar19 pp08-11 Industry News.indd 9 he says: Every job matters every job still matters today. The repeat referral business of each job has been critical to our success. Over the years, weve done a few acquisitions. We went from a purely northern Virginiabased local moving company to an inter-state moving company, to an international moving company. This helped grow our fleet and our client mix, and its just been one customer at a time. The Bushes and Clintons are just two notable families that JK Moving has served in the past. Kuhn adds: For me, I think its important that we protect the open space, so we still have farmland, and reserve and protect the historic viewsheds and roadways.
