Green revolution – a roadmap for change

Climate change Green revolution - a roadmap for change The ABI ramped up the industrys engagement on climate change as the UK prepared to host COP26, focusing on the development of an industry Roadmap showcasing the collective contribution ABI members can make and identify where action from Government and regulators can allow us to do more Following the launch of the Climate Change Roadmap in July, we have maintained momentum, both through highlighting our commitments widely and through using this to ramp up our engagement on the topic. In particular, we have used the clear industry position to build new partnerships with productive meetings with the Environment Agency, the Green Finance Institute, where we see strong potential to collaborate on EVs and energy efficiency, in particular, and Make My Money Matter. In addition, we have held follow up meetings with government departments and MPs to ensure the Roadmap is widely understood. Increased our ClimateWise report score from 72% in 2020 to 82% in 2021 We are also seeing strong interest in our work from our sister trade associations overseas we have been asked by the Australian, Canadian and Malaysian associations to present to them on how we took the Roadmap forward as they look to design similar strategies. We continue to promote the Roadmap with high-profile speaking opportunities including the Economists Sustainability Week, the FTs Climate Capital Race To Net Zero Summit and a Business Reporter event, with further speaking engagements planned before the end of 2021. To achieve net zero we need a whole economy transition - every company, bank, insurer and investor will have to adjust their business models, develop credible plans for the transition and implement them. As insurers commit to transition their underwriting activities to net zero through the soon-to-launch Net Zero Insurance Alliance, they will need the right tools and guidance to help them on this journey. ABIs Climate Change Roadmap highlights the need for near term milestones on the transition to net zero; the business and investment opportunity from the transition for UK insurers; and the need for supportive public policy measures. In this way, the Roadmap is a valuable contribution to this process to ensure that every professional financial decision takes climate change into account. Mark Carney, Prime Ministers Finance Adviser for COP26 and UN Special Envoy on Climate Action We hosted or took part in seven high-profile events in three days during the first week of COP26, in partnership with the Scottish Government, the City of London Corporation and ClimateWise. We were pleased to provide opportunities for so many member firms, and to showcase the work we have done together throughout the course of the year. We are very proud to have broken into the top 10 ClimateWise members in terms of our impact, and seen a 20% increase in our audit score to 83% since 2019. ClimateWise are also using us as a best practice case study in the public report that will be published early in 2022. We produced a film to showcase our sectors efforts on climate and sustainability. It has already had 60,000 views across our social media platforms this is the most watched piece of video content the ABI has ever produced. 7 high-profile events at COP26 Alongside this work, we have continued to work closely with members to ensure an effective response to the growing regulatory interest in climate change. This has included responding to a series of consultations and organising roundtables on TCFD implementation and engaging with the Bank of England on its approach to the upcoming Climate Biennial Exploratory Scenario (CBES exercise), where a response developed by the ABIs working group helped ensure a more proportionate approach to several aspects of the exercise.
