Obituaries Henry (Bob) Martin 1925 2017 Henry (Bob) Martin, a weights and measures inspector, former vice-president of CTSI and a Fellow of the institute, has died aged 92. Born in Sheffield in January 1925, Bob was adventurous and widely travelled. A dedicated family man, he enjoyed life to the full and indulged a life-long passion for cycling until the age of 86. An erudite, resilient man, he took a quiet efficiency and pride in his work, while his intelligence, wit and wisdom made him an invaluable resource, whenever advice was needed. Although an intelligent lad, he was unable to take up his grammar school place, so Bob’s first job was in metals recycling. Then, encouraged by his mother to go into the civil service for the pension – he transferred to work in the weights and measures department in Sheffield. When called up for National Service in the British Air Force, he was stationed in Egypt, the Midlands and Somerset. His love of cycling began as a boy in Sheffield, often riding out into Derbyshire for an evening or at a weekend. At a dance with his cycling pals one Saturday night, he met Marjorie and they married in October 1951. Bob took up a post in Kingston upon Hull as an inspector of weights and measures, and his daughter Angela – born in 1957– remembers going to work with him, checking pint glasses in the pubs, fish on the docks and, in October, visiting shops to ensure fireworks were correctly stored. In 1967, the family moved to Cambridge, where Bob was appointed deputy chief inspector. Then, in 1978, he was elected national secretary of the Trading Standards Institute – in which prestigious role many colleagues remember him for his quiet efficiency – and was also made vice-president of the institute. When Bob retired in 1985, the couple moved back to their roots in Sheffield to be nearer to Angela, husband Mike and grandsons, Stephen and Philip. Sadly, Marjorie died in 2003 but Bob, lucky to be in good health until aged about 87, benefited from that good occupational pension for 32 years. Contributed by members of Bobs family.
