Obituaries Christopher Lionel Woosey 1940 2017 Proud Cornishman and much-respected trading standards officer Chris Woosey has died aged 77. Chris sadly passed away in February, after a long and valiant battle against his illness. Born and educated in Truro, he became a trainee weights and measures inspector for Cornwall County Council at the age of 18. Basedat the Bodmin office an old Nissen hut (an easy-to-erect portable building invented during World War I) Chris trained with theNalgo Correspondence Institute, took the testamur exam, and qualified in 1963. The following year, he married Marjorie, a neighbour at his Bodmin lodgings. As a newly qualified inspector, Chris was tasked with updating the traders list of all the market gardens and farms in the division, particularly a busy horticultural area in the Tamar Valley. Weeks spent testing counter machines and dead weights meant he quickly gained a good working knowledge of the legislation at that time mainly weights and measures, food and drugs, and animal feed and had several successful prosecutions. A very practical and meticulous person, Chris organised various annual-visit and sampling programmes; always one step ahead of the scale maker or pump fitter, he could solve most problems himself. He designed a sampling device for animal-feed stuffs in flow, and made a test bed for bulk-fuel dipsticks. In 1974, after the service was restructured to keep abreast of everchanging consumer legislation, Chris was promoted to senior trading standards officer a role demanding specialist knowledge and serious investigation work. Further promoted, in 1979, to divisional trading standards officer when the Bodmin division moved to a new, purpose-built office, he ensured the building was equipped with all the necessary facilities andequipment. Chris took the county lead when the new Food Safety Act and its associated regulations became law, undertaking staff training and developing an audit schedule when visiting manufacturing premises. A member of the Institute of Trading Standards Administration (now CTSI), he became chairman of the South West branch in 1979/80. A member of the Bodmin French Twinning Association and theRound Table, Chris many hobbies included caravanning with his wife he was chairman of the Devon and Cornwall branch of the Caravan Club shooting, stamp collecting, and buying and selling antiques andjewellery. Taking early retirement in 1993, after 35 years of loyal and dedicated service, Chris was able to focus more on his family Marjorie, son Robert and two grandchildren, who all survive him and his hobbies.
