Editorial - TS Today

From the editor-in-chief Think tank it through Chris Fay Editor-in-chief chrisf@tsi.org.uk Were all in this together. By which I mean Brexit, of course, after Article 50 was triggered, firing the starting gun on the two-year departure process from the European Union (EU). Many will recall David Cameron first uttering that phrase after the financial crash of 2007/08, when he was still in opposition. Im reminded of it today because of the sentiment behind it and not necessarily the circumstances. Success or failure, Brexit will be an incredible challenge that will test our democracy and demand cross-party cooperation. The Great Repeal Bill will convert wherever practical and appropriate the entire body of EU law into the UKs statute book. The implications for consumers and businesses across the UK and its devolved nations, split on Brexit, are huge. Citizens Advice, MoneySavingExpert.com and Which? are calling for a cross-government, high-level working group focused solely on securing the best deal possible for UK consumers. They argue that fewer than a third of consumers believe they will be represented during the negotiations and cite a vast range of consumer rights, safety and quality standards, and enforcement regimes founded in EU legislation that must be considered. CTSI stands ready to play its part in this process and the expertise held by the institute and the trading standards profession will be invaluable. To help focus its efforts, we are forming a Brexit Think Tank, with members drawn from the profession who will seek to influence and inform the Brexit process while highlighting the opportunities and threats during the ongoing negotiations. Meanwhile, it is business as usual in TS Today, which this month looks at a report that suggests action against errant letting agents in London differs wildly between boroughs. In addition, we report back from CTSIs first Leadership Conference and examine what the proposed new fining powers for regulators might look like. Thanks for reading,
