Wake-up call

An Indesit tumble dryer is thought to have caused the latest blaze in west London ChArliE BArd / ShuTTErSToCk Noticeboard Tumble dryer saga rumbles on CTSI chief executive Leon Livermore has urged manufacturer Whirlpool to recall the millions of potentially faulty tumble dryers in use in peoples homes, during an interview on BBC Radio 4. Speaking about the ongoing tumble dryer saga on You and Yours, Livermore also called on government to undertake a review and support the outcomes of the Lynn Faulds Wood review of product recalls, and actually have a national body who can take responsibility for recalls and product safety. He said: Whirlpool and the whole system has been overwhelmed by the size of this, and its a bit unfair on a small local authority such as Peterborough to have to take responsibility for what is a national issue. During the programme, Livermore agreed with London Fire Brigades advice that affected tumble dryers should not be used until they had been fixed by a qualified repairer. The interview followed a serious blaze at a block of flats in west London, which was said to have been caused by an Indesit tumble dryer. Colleagues at Peterborough Trading Standards have been forced to advise Whirlpool that the incidence of affected machines doesnt warrant a recall under current law. Livermore added: Unfortunately, Ive spoken to colleagues in Peterborough and according to them the law does not compel them to issue a recall. However, any commonsense test will tell us that, actually, I wouldnt advise my mum to use one of these appliances, so I wouldnt advise anyone else to. A trading standards manager has committed herself to running five miles a day for 50 consecutive days, for Macmillan Cancer Support, to mark her 50th birthday. Speaking of her challenge which is almost equivalent to 10 marathons Bucks and Surrey Trading Standards manager Gina Green said: I know this is not in the same league as David Walliams or Eddie Izzard, but I reckon it may be tricky, particularly as I am getting on a bit, my knees are a bit dodgy and there will not be any recovery days. She asks colleagues who see her to give her a wave and a toot of encouragement, as some of the runs will be completed at lunchtimes. Her last run will be on her 50th birthday, on 2 November.
