From the Editor Welcome

From the Editor Welcome This issue, we welcome Ursula Bryan as our new CEO of the Institute. She gives an overview of the megatrends identified by our community as those areas having most impact on asset management globally, which have been summarised in a draft position paper. She welcomes your views, so please do get involved in the discussion on our new forum. Our main focus for this issue is on the transportation sector. In our lead feature, Nick Short discusses the need to incorporate carbon costs into total cost of ownership in order to meet mounting pressures around decarbonisation. He explains the difficult balancing act across the cost, carbon and customer triangle that must be at the forefront of all asset managers minds. Then, Dr Michael Wright explains how innovative methods being used on the M25 Design Build Finance Operate (DBFO) contract are quite literally paving the way forward by utilising reclaimed asphalt in road resurfacing. This is having a significant impact on reducing carbon footprints and delivering National Highways net zero highways 2050 plan. We also hear from Chris Genin, Head of Asset Management at DP World, about his journey into asset management and how hes responding to challenges faced in the sector. Recently, he has been working with the IAM to extend our reach into the lessrepresented sectors by working to introduce a Gulf Chapter. Dr Nima Sarmadi sets out the need to future-proof transportation asset management and, in particular, the fundamental role communication-based infrastructure telecoms, sensor technology and artificial intelligence will have on transforming the way we tackle it. Meanwhile, Dr Ali Alian looks at the importance of an asset resilience system, especially in the transportation sector. Bernard Gaudreault reviews the findings from our survey sent out to members on the topic of resilience. He discusses some of the key emerging and future drivers impacting on resilience, such as climate change, global population growth and technological advances. How and why employee resistance plays such a fundamental role in the success or failure of change initiatives is explored by Dr Susan Lattanzio. We also cover the views of five industry experts on this crucial topic and the human attitude to change. IAM Professional Development and Membership Manager Jodie Williamson explains the progress that has been made in defining and strengthening the value proposition of IAM membership. We have been developing mentoring support and our CPD hub, including our new discussion forum that allows members to connect to the wider asset management community and discuss key topics. We also continue our series showcasing the work of the winners and finalists from the 2021 Asset Management Excellence Awards. Finally, we pay tribute to the life of Norman Eason, our founding President who died aged 81 in February this year. David McKeown looks back at Normans life and the instrumental contribution he made shaping the IAM into what it is today.
