CIBSE NEWS InTandem wins Employer of the Year award IN BRIEF Build2Perfrom 2020 goes online The opening sessions of CIBSEs Build2Perform Live have been announced: Building safety reform; and Delivering projects and efficiency using digital tools. Building safety reform: this session will explain the role of the new Building Safety Regulator and the changes in culture, competence and working practices that the Building Safety Bill will demand. Delivering projects and efficiency using digital tools: this session will offer practical knowledge about standardised project delivery tools for concept design, including examples of digitising a common design task cable containment sizing. It will demonstrate ideas for digitising typical day-to-day processes to make them faster. Other themes include: net-zero carbon; health, wellbeing and safety; climate adaptation; circular economy; and smart buildings. Build2Perform will take place from 23-26 November, entirely online. BMS rm named Employer of the Year for second time InTandem Systems has been crowned Employer of the Year, taking the overall award at the CIBSE Young Engineers Awards. It previously won the award in 2017. InTandem also won in the small company category (up to 50 employees) the category that received the highest number of entries with the judges noting the agility of small companies to embrace a wide variety of initiatives that support the future of their young engineers. Its entry stated: InTandem strives to work with young people to develop their passion for building services engineering and specically BMS (building management systems). The judges agreed that this passion came through clearly in the entry. InTandem Systems internal code of practice focuses on introducing new recruits to the whole spectrum of BMS, so they can see rst-hand the potential career pathways within their organisation and the wider building services engineering sector. Elementa Consulting won the prize in the medium category (51-300 employees). The judges noted Elementas clear vision for the organisation and, under the leadership of managing principal Brian Goldsmith, the company empowers and invests in young engineers to achieve and progress. In the large company category (more than 300 employees), the judges were impressed by the commitment of the entrants to young engineers acquiring and sharing digital engineering skills, and also the innovative way that the large companies adapted to deliver training throughout periods of lockdown. Cundall won this category. It stood out because of its dedication to an inclusive and diverse workplace, supported by its three structured early career path entry points: trainee, apprentice, and graduate enabling the rm to attract junior talent from diverse backgrounds, and with a range of experience. Black History Month To celebrate Black History Month in October, the CIBSE Inclusivity Panel launched a new Role Model profile series, designed to help inspire and promote a more diverse workforce in the building services industry. The first profile is from Hakeem Makanju, building services manager for Transport for London, and it features some inspiring advice to his younger self: No-one can understand your aspirations better than you, own it and dont leave it in the hands of others to decide whats possible. The role model series will continue throughout the year, profiling inspiring individuals from under-represented groups. Visit bit.ly/CJNOV20CN2 Applying light for human health The Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) Lighting Research and Technology Symposium 2020 will take place from 2-6 November. This online event will set out where and how lighting can condently be applied to enhance human health. The SLL has has curated a programme designed to address the key topics within the light and health conversation. Sessions include: how light exposure affects human health; lighting for day-work and schools; lighting for homes; lighting for people with dementia; how can natural lighting necessary for human health be implemented?; and the future of lighting and health. The symposium features a broad range of expert speakers including: Russell Foster CBE, professor of circadian neuroscience and head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Oxford; Dr Mark Rea from the Lighting Research Centre, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Dr Mariana Figueiro from Rutgers Institute for Health; Florence Lam, Arup Fellow and global lighting design leader.
