A global view Insights, projects and people from across the world of Rail & Transit at SNC-Lavalin NEWS IN BRIEF InnoTrans 2016 Teams from all over the world attended InnoTrans 2016 in Berlin in September. This was the first year that SNC-Lavalin Rail & Transit had been represented at the biennial show; Interfleet exhibited at the event in 2014. Signal sighting success with SSiFT from SNC-Lavalin The SNC-Lavalin Rail & Transit Software team has developed a revolutionary new tool, in conjunction with Network Rails Signalling Innovations Group (SIG), whichhas streamlined signal and sign sighting across the authority responsible for Britains railway network. The purpose of signal sighting is to ensure that a train driver can quickly and accurately interpret a signal. Drivers have only seconds to take appropriate action, so many issues need to be considered when designing a signal and determining its most appropriate location. Signal sighting activities are undertaken during the signalling scheme design process and when Signals Passed at Danger (SPADs) have been reported. SNC-Lavalins Signal Sighting Form Tool(SSiFT v3) replaces a complex spreadsheet-based approach. SSiFT v3 is a web-based solution that is accessible to authorised users via clyx.net. It offers designers the ability to create sighting forms quickly and easily. SSiFT ensures consistency and delivers a managed workflow with version control, plus a centrally accessible and searchable database. Automated form creation allows up to 70% of the form content to be pre-populated, basedupondata mastered in other Network Rail design tools. Where there is a need for a trackside visit, the sighting committee can use a fully integrated SSiFT mobile app. This allows users to download the sighting-form data to their device and undertake site-based sighting activities. Upon completion, the updated data can be re-synced seamlessly at the touch of a button. Simon Perkin, Section Head for Systems & Information Solutions at SNC-Lavalin, said: SSiFT v3 has enjoyed a high level of adoption, with active users across 17 different organisations. Users have reported numerous benefits and significant time savings, with forms typically being produced in minutes rather than hours. Through integration with other SIG design tools, fewer site visits are required and less time is spent there, which reduces staff exposure to trackside risks. These efficiency improvements also lead to cost savings. goo.gl/6megej SSiFT v3 has enjoyed a high level of adoption, with active users across 17 different organisations.
