Editorial - TS Today

From the editor-in-chief Brexit on my mind Eleni Chalkidou Editor-in-chief elenic@tsi.org.uk To those who dont know me, my week ahead may look rather chaotic. Having just dealt with #ChickenGate, price hikes, flight cancellation pandemonium and #CarClocking, I am now looking forward to the Greater London Branch meeting, Brexit Think Tank, Consumer Protection Panel meeting and a CTSI Council meeting. Some of these certainly form part of my first time CTSI experiences. Theres a lot going on, but I love the chaos in my head, it serves to throw into sharp relief what really matters. For instance, in an ideal world, governments would put consumers at the heart of all Brexit negotiations by including the expertise offered by consumer protection champions, who would ensure a balanced view. Brexit will present unparalleled opportunities for Britain, but what of the unexpected threats? With that in mind, the CTSI Brexit Think Tank has called upon its Brexperts to scope where EU membership has influenced trading standards. Many of the rights that consumers have come to expect including product and food safety will be shaped and determined over the coming years. The Think Tank findings will inform governments, assist the trading standards profession and apprise any decision-makers of how to uphold the highest standards of consumer protection. CTSI welcomes input and invites you to send your thoughts to bttp@tsi.org.uk I am also excited about meeting members at the Greater London Branch meeting, and Im particularly looking forward to sharing some comms, press and PR expertise with the group. There are several interesting updates and debates on the agenda, including: scams; the effectiveness of building and fire regulations, and the related compliance and enforcement that goes with that; and a new safety proposal. I cant wait to be part of these discussions. CTSI was proud to work closely with the organisers of London Trading Standards Week (LTSW) at the end of September. The event focused on knives, lettings, scams and doorstep crime, business advice and product safety. We have nothing but respect and praise for the work undertaken, and know how important its impact is. Lastly, the Consumer Protection Partnership (CPP) has now started work on the National Consumer Week (NCW) campaign, which will focus on subscriptions. It will be held at the end of November or beginning of December, to coincide with Cyber Monday promotions. CTSI is working closely with the CPP to find ways to maximise exposure of possible scams and wider subscription issues to diminish consumer harm. I cant wait to meet more of you in the coming months. Thanks for reading and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
