Im terrified of getting coronavirus and have stayed home for weeks, but Im getting more and more isolated and unfit. What can I do? Bryan, via email Dr Sarah Jarvis answers: This is a challenge for so many people. Its bad enough having an autoimmune condition, where your bodys immune system turns on itself. We have made great strides with drugs to improve symptoms and even delay progression but they often work by damping down your immune system. This makes you more prone to infection. There are two main reasons for self-isolation: because you have suspected coronavirus; and to reduce the risk of vulnerable people getting the virus. If youre self-isolating, you dont need to stay strictly within your home unless government advice changes, or youre advised by the NHS to practise shielding because of your medical condition. Getting out once a day, as long as you can avoid social contact, is good for your mental and physical health. Its also a good idea to exercise regularly at home. A yoga mat can be ordered online and there are plenty of online tutorials for exercise aimed at people of all abilities and disabilities. The Versus Arthritis website also has a wide range of exercises to manage joint pain. Set aside a regular time for this, to get into a routine. Looking after your mental health if youre self-isolating is also crucial. Stay in touch with friends through social media or by phone. Many of my older patients have organised virtual coffee mornings or evening drinks on FaceTime. A forum (community.versusarthritis.org) is also a great way to connect with people. Ask the expert FIONA LACON is a Helpline Advisor for Versus Arthritis Q I have fibromyalgia. The pain is getting me down and I am tired all the time. I cant sleep and suffer with brain fog. Ive put on weight because Im not so active now. What can I do, apart from taking strong painkillers? Delyth, 55, Cardiff Fiona answers: There are things you can do apart from taking medication. Eating a healthy, balanced diet, losing some weight and getting the right kind of gentle exercise can make a difference. Pace yourself, and balance activity with rest. Exercise may feel uncomfortable at first, but increasing muscle strength and improving mobility can alleviate pain. Short walks may be good, with your husband for company. Exercise helps you sleep, too. Learning relaxation techniques or mindfulness may help to reduce stress levels. CBT or talking therapies may be worth considering in the future, too.
