RED CROSS TEACHES FIRSTAID BASICS TO FIDI OFFICE I f you tried to reach the FIDI Office on 11 June, you might have been surprised by the lack of response. There was a good reason, however: we were lying on the floor learning the basic steps of first aid. According to the European Resuscitation Council, sudden cardiac arrest is the third most common cause of death in industrialised nations. There are more than350,000 cases every year in Europe. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), or cardiac massage, can double oreven triple a persons chance of survival if administered immediately after cardiac arrest. To ensure that FIDI staff know what to do in case of an emergency, we invited the Red Cross Belgium to the office for a day of first-aid training and it was more fun than we expected! For more information on first-aid training, contact your local Red Cross or Red Crescent National Society.
